Commentary On Habits

Habits

Habits comprise every behavior we are currently doing.

Many habits are below our conscious perception, in the domain of the Unconscious.

Habits govern every aspect of our lives, including digestion, respiration, rem sleep, information processing, etc.

Habits are vital for health and well being, infact, habits are really all we have in the face of the endless chaos of suffering.

Habits can be healthy or not healthy, many Mal-adaptive behaviors like drug abuse behaviors for instance, originally were intended to help us, but may not pan out in the long term as being useful to long term positive outcome. This ironically shows the power habits have, and the value in cultivating them in ways that are useful for our long term positive outcome.

Habits are underwritten and composed from functioning of the nervous system referred to as “homeostasis”, which is a feeling produced in the nervous system in response to stable reference points of behavior in our environment. This stability serves as a sort of raft in the ocean of chaos outside our our control. It creates a sense of agency and hope, producing corresponding neurochemistry that makes us feel good.

Homeostasis is the feeling of stability, however Habits still require ATP energy to create, maintain, and grow. ATP energy is derived from calories that are made available to the brain and nervous system for all current habits/behaviors. The Nervous System is an evolutionary system, and always needs to have reserve energy in case of crisis, ie Tiger attack, storms, injury. In fact, if your system runs out of reserve energy, it wont be able to respond to adversity, and if exhausted, your dna will recieve full brunt of damage from the adversity.

As a result, your intelligent nervous system only tolerates a certain amount of new energy to be used to create new habits. Although you might be able to do a behavior one or several times, your system wont allow you to do that same behavior consistently every day if it cuts into its reserve energy. This is why many people fail to create new behaviors, ie new years resolution.

Successful habit creation starts small, creating neurological circuitry, and not cutting into reserve energy. The Nervous system will take on a positive view of this new behavior and start sequestering calories for constant production of new ATP energy to maintain this new habit, Which then is attached with homeostasis energy, making you feel good!

Habits are a game of consistency, at the slowest increase over time. Let your nervous system work for you. Start small, progress small, exponentially build.

Below are my top 10+ habits recommendations, I hope they are useful!
